You stay with a local family in a rural Andean environment, visit coffee, cacao and tea plantations, learn traditional and organic production methods, harvest, roast and prepare coffee and cacao, create your own chocolate from raw cacao beans, discover exotic fruits grown on the property, and share meals and daily moments with local people.

Day 1

Cusco to the Andean Family Home – Plantations Exploration

Your journey begins in Cusco with transportation heading towards the warmer regions of the Andes. The scenery slowly transforms into blue valleys full of biodiversity when you reach the family house of a local family. You enter a plain and natural setting to provide the experience that is indeed personalized.
You visit the plantations and the other properties, get to know about coffee, tea and cacao farming and hear the stories of the people who cultivate the land first-hand. You also learn about life in the area depending on which season you are in, you will find various crops, different fruits and get to know more about the area. The practical experiences allow you to harvest, roast and prepare coffee in addition to relating to the tunes of the country-side.
During the evening you have a meal with the family and participate in ordinary moments in the day to day life. This is an authentic and significant interaction in the cozy Andean environment. The night before you will spend the night with your hosts, and then sleep in anticipation of the cacao-themed day to come.

Cacao Plantation Visit – Hands-On Chocolate Making & Departure

The next day entails cacao with you being taken to a local plantation and learning the entire process of harvesting and fermentation to drying and roasting. Local farmers take you through the process of the traditional and organic technique step-by-step in the very center of the cacao region.
You are involved during the making of cacao and convert raw beans into hot chocolate that you brew yourself in a fun and interactive manner. The whole process of delivering the bean to cup (and chocolate) comes alive.
You have a last meal with the family at noon and then it is off to you again. This is the best place to add to an extended itinerary as you can go back to Cusco or go towards Machu Picchu.
